Merry was born in a rural area, and fell into the life of a "horse girl" relatively easily. She showed talent at local 4-H shows, and was soon taking formal lessons.

Her parents died in a car accident when she was fourteen, and her care passed to her mother's best friend. Her homelife went from idyllic to catastrophic, and she threw herself into her sport. Anxious to escape from her situation, she married at seventeen to a coach who was sure he could get her to the Olympics. His dream became her dream. She made the United States team the next year, and was on her way.

She missed the London Olympics because of the birth of her youngest son, Fritz, but competed in Rio, Tokyo, and Paris. She has two individual gold medals, two team silvers and a gold.

Merry is now the owner of Riverside Farm, an elite eventing barn in Canandaigua, New York, at the tip of one of the Finger Lakes. Her hobbies include training rides, filling out show entries, and singing at the top of her lungs while doing conditioning rides. (She was a soloist with her high school choir, so it's not as bad as it seems.) She does enjoy cooking for her family, and hosts a small dinner party for a variety of her staff every Wednesday night.

Merry has never had time for romance, or so she told herself. She married young to a no-nonsense German, the kind of man who would see nothing wrong with forgetting an anniversary after being married for a few years. She spent most of her love on her children. Now that they're getting older, she can't shake the feeling that she's missing something...
