birds of a feather
While it probably wasn't fair of her to hold a grudge against Mrs. Lipscomb for something that happened in the second grade Morrigan couldn't deny that she indeed was holding one hell of a grudge against the mild-mannered teacher who once wrongly accused her of plagiarism.

It was the principle of the thing! The idea that Morrigan had actually had the audacity to somehow lift fake zodiacs wholesale somehow from some shitty magazine when any moron with two hands an half an imagination could write them given ten minutes and the incentive of a passing grade.

And over the word upstaged.

Honestly. No one could blame her for voting against Mrs. Lipscomb for the school board even if Morrigan was technically casting a vote on the behalf of each of her parents who were so completely uncaring about her (numerous) passionate arguments against the old hag getting even a fingerhold on the vacant school board position.

Not that either of the Wolfe couple had any intention of voting or cared one way or another which was also why Morrigan had told herself that it was very reasonable to just go ahead and vote for them. Didn't her teachers always say how important it was to make sure your vote counted?

I hope Mrs. Lipscomb cries when she is rejected.

Stuck as she was in her imaginations of righteous justice Morrigan didn't see that she was headed on a collision course, slamming into the back of a stranger so hard they both went tumbling. Worse: her backpack was half-zipped which meant all of her things went flying cartoonishly through the air, landing haphazardly all over the vacant hallway.

"Sugar!"

"...I'm sorry?"

Mortified couldn't begin to describe how she felt in that moment staring into the eyes of the new student after she'd done something as embarrassing as censor herself like she was five years old. "I mean shit. Shit. Like the curse. I do curse, all the time even. I'm not lame. It's just that I said fuck once and Renee said it in front of Grandma Vivian and you would have thought the world was coming to an end so I'm trying to be better about it." Oh god, and now she was rambling.

She could feel her cheeks burning, no doubt bright pink. Can the ground just swallow me up now please?

Thankfully, said new student didn't seem to mind her rambling. In fact he even smiled at her, revealing two devastating dimples on either side of his mouth. Of course he's cute. Not that it was a new thought. In a school as small as theirs she already knew more about Arthur Durant than she should given that they'd never spoken, but that's just how it was.

Like, Cindy Hayes at the Pick N' Save said when Arthur came into town he'd had gorgeous shoulder-length hair, but that uncle of his had buzzed it all off. And later Arthur had gone to the local convenience store and bought two milky-ways before spending the afternoon in the library reading The Count of Monte Cristo.

She also knew he'd politely shut down offers to join the football team, that he was from Kansas originally but his parents had sent him to live with his aunt and uncle for unknown reasons - reasons the town was already wildly speculating about. He also had gorgeous grey-blue eyes with flecks of brown in them and had spent most of his first week since transferring lurking around the art room.

But I didn't know his voice sounded like that. Soft, honeysweet. It made her feel warm inside like sneaking a drink of spiked apple cider.

Gently, Arthur helped her gather her belongings up in a neat pile before handing them over and helping her stand. He hadn't said anything else since she'd clammed up, but he kept watching her with that smile. Finally he held out his hand, shaking hers with a confident grip. "My name is Art, little rambler."

"Morrigan. I swear I am not always this awkward."

"Well then, I'm lucky I caught you in just the right mood, Morrigan."

The Besties
Nicola Harris, 28
Though they went to high school together it wasn't until after graduation that Nicola and Morrigan began hanging out to study as both were attending ASU virtually. Morrigan because she wanted to focus on riding and Nicola because her grandparents were getting older and needed somebody to help them out. As they'd raised her it wasn't even a question. Nicola now runs the Oddwell Gazette and lives above the office.

Bethany Wyatt, 26
A new but fastly-made friend, owner of Cryptid Coffee. Met after Renee dragged Morrigan in for some much-needed caffeine. She's solid, a bit sassy, and very down to Earth. The only things she cares about is making quality coffee and her restored 50s Ford Pickup - a restoration project she took on herself.

LOOK AT YOU!
Height: 5'6
Weight: 150lbs
Hair Color: Red
Eye Color: Blue

Morrigan has pale, freckled skin, a piercing stare, and a tendency to slouch. She's always stood out due to her vibrant hair but often hid behind over-sized sweaters and glasses. After high school she finally embraced contacts and her inner cozy-grandma much to the amusement of her younger sister Renee. Morrigan carries herself with a confidence she does not often feel but the second someone gets flirty with her she blushes down to her toes.
To quote Cher from Clueless, this is my most capable outfit!
WHO TELLS YOUR STORY
Morrigan was born on October 11th to Joel & Caitlin Trakand in Oddwell, AZ. Her mother didn't even have time to put on her shoes let alone drive to the hospital - Morrigan was born right there in the foyer of their house. She grew up alongside her twin cousins James & Theodore, running through the desert, having sleepovers in the backyard, and generally had a happy childhood. For a time things were tense between her parents but they worked it out and Renee was born when Morrigan was four.

When she was fourteen her cousin Hugh brought home a baby girl, Everleigh, and more or less left her to whoever felt like babysitting - that person usually being Morrigan. It wasn't until Morrigan ended up as the full-time caretaker of Everleigh for nearly three months that her parents took notice and stepped in - after that, Everleigh spent most of her time being watched by her grandparents, but Morrigan is still very close to her.

At fifteen, Morrigan met the first love of her life, Alanis Durant. Their relationship began as a friendship but later blossomed into a true romance. They both graduated early at seventeen and made the difficult decision to break up so they could explore and find out who they were outside of their relationship. When Alanis moved to Seattle they remained in touch and continue to be best friends to this day.

While attending ASU online and pursuing a career as a professional dressage rider Morrigan met Aubrey Edelstein. She was a professional photographer - older, worldly, educated - there to take pictures of the event but there was a spark there. They ended up dating long distance until the death of Morrigan's parents. Nineteen year old Morrigan was devastated, not to mention she now had custody of her younger rebellious sister and the responsibility of the stable on her shoulders.

Morrigan dropped out of school in order to have time to manage everything and Aubrey made the big jump, moving to Oddwell that year though they continued to live separately for the sake of Renee who had already dealt with so much change. Not to mention, Morrigan wasn't sure if she was really ready for that sort of commitment.

Two years later, shortly before Renee turned eighteen and was officially in charge of herself, Aubrey asked Morrigan to come with her. There was a whole world out there for them to explore, so much more than the sleepy little town of Oddwell. But what Aubrey saw as an albatross across Morrigan's shoulders was actually part of her heart, woven into her skin.

It wasn't that she couldn't leave Oddwell - she didn't want to leave.

The breakup was hard, but Aubrey understood and moved back to upstate New York, chasing inspiration as she always had. The pair remain friends and Aubrey does her best to show up when the Trakand team is in town or nearby.

A year later Morrigan hired the stunning Kendall Austin part-time to help exercise the horses. She was tall with long dark hair and bright blue eyes, and made it crystal clear that she wouldn't be stuck in Oddwell forever. She had dreams and goals and this was just a stop on the road. The pair decided to date anyway, with the understanding that there was an end date in mind.

Alanis, Aubrey, and Kendall ended up meeting and jokingly forming the 'harem' after realizing how similar in looks they all were. Pretty much everyone refers to Morrigan's exes as part of the harem these days much to her chagrin. When she had enough money saved Kendall indeed moved on, staying in New York with Aubrey funnily enough. The breakup was very amicable and Morrigan always tells Kendall how proud she is of her and all her success.

Still, the breakup did make Morrigan think there was something wrong with her. She took a break from dating entirely, focusing on herself, Trakand, and her family. Those years were very good for her and she emerged feeling stronger and a bit more sure of herself.

Four years later she met Gabriella Warren at a conference and there was an almost instant attraction there. Gabriella was bold and so certain of herself and her place in the world. She had drive, she had focus... all the things Morrigan felt were her kryptonite. They tried dating long-distance but after a few months realized it just wasn't working and they agreed to split up.

Attending a concert in Los Angeles Morrigan quite literally ran into the beautiful Angelina Barrett, a cellist for the Los Angeles Orchestra. They hit it off but Morrigan was wary of trying a long distance relationship again - prompting Angelina to move to Phoenix, AZ. It was still long distance, just not AS long.

That same year baby Everleigh at barely 16 had a baby herself, Carlin. The entire family was left reeling but came together to help the poor girl out. Morrigan & Renee babysit for her any time she asks, wanting Everleigh to be able to at least graduate since her father is useless, and they both adore little Carlin.

Another big change that year was the discovery that her father had had an affair and she had a half-brother, Tobias Wolfe. He came to the United States from France to meet them and it went well - despite the initial awkwardness, all three siblings get along and make sure they keep in contact. Perhaps if her mother had been alive Morrigan might have felt guilty, but with both of her parents gone she'd rather just be grateful for having Tobias in her life.

This year has been jarring for Morrigan, unfortunately. Angelina wanted to settle down after two years together, to move to Oddwell and get married, have kids, all of it. But despite saying that's all she ever wanted... Morrigan panicked. She handled the conversation badly in the moment causing a huge fight and a breakup. She's since apologized but both agree they're on different pages.
The limits of the possible can only be defined by going beyond them into the impossible.
